If you are thinking about buying an electric vehicle, the clock is now ticking. President Donald Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” has officially passed Congress, and with it, a countdown that will kill the popular $7,500 federal tax credit for new electric vehicles.
The reality is that the market for EVs is very small. The utility of EVs is very limited. AND... if you have to mandate or incentivize the sales (with huge tax credits), then the product is not inherently marketable or desirable. A good product, in a FREE MARKET, sells itself. Period.
Anyhoo... here's the article:
The Great American EV Fire Sale Is About to Begin
President Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” just wiped out key clean energy subsidies. If you want that $7,500 EV discount, act fast.
Mind you, it is readily apparent that Gizmodo is a liberal magazine... "Clean energy???" No such thing, idiots.
The bad news for clean energy does not stop there. The 30% tax credit for rooftop solar installations is now set to end on December 31, 2025, as are incentives for geothermal heat pumps and other home energy devices.
Boohooo!
The new law also dismantles the regulatory framework that has pushed automakers to produce more electric vehicles. It effectively guts the federal Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards by reducing the penalties for noncompliance to zero. Previously, automakers who failed to meet fuel efficiency targets had to pay steep fines or buy regulatory credits from more efficient companies like Tesla. Now, that financial pressure is gone.
Boohooo! I mean HOORAY! This is the BEST news! Now car makers can make models enthusiasts WANT. My beloved Subaru STI was discontinued because of the CAFE standards. The gas mileage of the STI dragged down the "fleet efficiency average" too much. So, they took it off the market. It was the most fun car I've ever driven... not just owned... driven. I've driven (but not owned) some amazing cars including Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, McLaren, Lotus. The STI is more fun than any of those... I'm not kidding. I beat on my STI like a rented mule. Hundreds of laps on the track. And it was my daily "hockey dad" driver, too.
Maybe... just maaaaaaaaaaybe, we'll see some fun cars come back!
If they came out with a new STI that isn't dumbed down (and weighed down) with amenities and luxuries... a true driver's car like the first one.... I'd be all in!
But for the average person, the message is much simpler: the era of federally subsidized electric vehicles is coming to a very abrupt end.
Awesome news. Truly. They never should have been subsidized in the first place.
Bonus: Make liberals cry!
