What ya listening to?

Ran a few tracks off Queensryche's "Empire" (hi-res remastered 2003) album today. WOOT!

This chick used to show up on my gootoob feed frequently. Very technical. Haven't seen her in a while since she broke up with me... :( ;)

Meh... no power there. She needs to learn to beat those skins! Maybe take a lesson or two from this little girl, who beats them like they owe her money!

I hear ya! All her stuff is electronically amped so potentially low effort. She doesn't even break a sweat... ;)

PS: re: sweat: I was thinking she has the AC on full blast but her headlights are never on...

In fairness to her- those V-Drums she uses, while wonderful tools, have their limitations, and the perception of "power" lacking you describe can be one of them. But its far more the player.

Contrast the sound of NP rolling down the concert toms in his 1976 solo from "All The World's A Stage" and then in his last 10 years of drumming. Understandably his power had significantly decreased and those skins and tom shells react so differently.

Back to her- I don't know just how good V-Drums has become with its latest tech, but I do have a feeling yes, as Racer pointed-out it's how she's attacking the skins, or not. IMO Guitar, Drums, and Bass are the three most sensitive instruments to the personal dynamics, attack, and handling/hands of the individual player.

A little story- many years ago one of the bands I was in had the pleasure of drummer Simon Wright sitting-in with us at an event. The song chosen to play was Dio's "Holy Diver"...you should have seen the look on our drummer's face when Simon let loose on that kit....I could have parked a car in his mouth. Just explosive. Two completely different sounds. Same kit.

And if I may, yes, we ROCKED it. hehe

Another similar story- a friend of mine asked me to help him set up his guitar rig, as he wasn't happy with his sound. Nice guy, talented, yet he played with a very light attack. So, we got together one day and he had his Strat, and his Les Paul out, and we were going through his stuff and how he set up and had things dialed-in & he handed the guitar to me after playing and with a wrinkled-up nose said "man I just don't like my sound"...

I hit an "A" chord. It went from a Yugo to a Ferrari in the time it took to hand me the guitar. 'KERANNGGGG!'

He about messed his drawers. "What did you DO??" he asked. "I Attacked the strings with power. Don't be afraid to do that. The guitar is a dynamic instrument that reacts to how light, or how hard you hit the strings." And handed it back to him. A whole new world just opened-up to him. hehe

Saved him a ton of money. hehe. Anyway, personal dynamics make such a difference.

You're kidding, right? He beat those skins like a mule until the very end. His face made it look effortless, but I've never heard anyone (until just now) suggest he didn't have incredible power behind the sticks, even just before he retired.

Neil Peart does not approve.jpg

In all fairness to her, she DOES use different kits in different videos. But I've yet to see her sweat... ;)

No I'm not kidding. ATWAS has those concert toms he rolls down sounding like barking cannons because he was hitting them HARD.
But in his last 10 years he was MUCH more subdued on them. It's ok. He certainly still had the chops and stamina. And I'm not saying that to be unfair or critical. NO harm, no foul. Geddy can't sing like he used to, either. That's life.

Yeah.... seeing Geddy lose his voice was hard.

I still disagree about Neil.

Neil Peart - Subdivisions isolated drums.

Are we going to Willy-wave over who is the bigger Rush fan? lol Thank you for posting that…the video proves my point, if one is truly objective. Even go back and listen to his studio performance of Subdivisions. He still had quite a ‘crack’ (over pitch) on those toms on the album….that comes from hitting them harder.

Btw the concert toms are the first 4 smallest toms on the left side (he actually deleted one years ago when he changed his setup). Even Neil himself had admitted to not hitting the skins as hard as he used to, when he was 40+ years younger. I never said he player poorly, without power; just that he wasn’t as aggressive and powerful as he had been years ago, and the sound those toms made in that clip don’t lie. In 1975, rolling down those toms Neil was absolutely explosive.

These above were more musical and lesser bombastic due to his lessened attack- not hitting them as hard.

ATWAS was in 1975. Decades before the above clip.

But we can agree to disagree. Carry on, good man.

Might I posit that Carl Palmer of ELP (and Asia) was/is quite a drummer and somewhat under-rated. The solo from this 1974 live performance of "Karn Evil 9" has to be one the MOST frenzied drum solos I've ever seen! I had to pause the video to get some water I was sweating so much just watching it! :D Solo runs from about 2:44 to 7:30.

LOL I know that wasn't listening to anything today, but it's preparation!

I may have posted this before. Maybe not. Neil's more "famous" for songs like "YYZ" and "Tom Sawyer." But this less popular song is my favorite drum piece by Neil. Watch it all the way through. At about 3:00 is where he goes into "beast mode." And then at about 3:40 mega-beast-mode. Amazing stuff.
