I bought this Ruger American Gen 2 on sale and it's now on my most favored gun list. I chose 308. I replaced the factory trigger this morning with a Timney. There was nothing wrong with the factory trigger but the Timney is a bit more refined and breaks like glass. It's easily adjustable from 2-4 lbs. I have not tested it yet but have it somewhere around 2.5 lbs.
The scope is more than adequate but not sophisticated or expensive. It's a Vortex Crossfire II 3-12x56, second focal plane. It is as clear as can be and does really well in low light conditions due to the big objective lens. This optic punches way above its weight. I was spotting a squirrel running across a power line about 200 yards away and at full magnification I could count the hairs on his bushy tail. The eye relief is excellent.
Note the fluted barrel. It's bronze Cerakote and is threaded. Mag is ten rounds. Also comes with a 4 round mag. The LOP is adjustable with different sized spacers.
I'll run some ammo thru it this next week to make sure the trigger and scope are properly dialed in. I'll probably put a bipod on it and will definitely add a sling.
This gun needs to reliably deliver a 3 round group that's 4.5 inches at 500 yards with a 30 caliber can and no fiddle-fucking around. Meaning... walking sling or cradle carry position to bang in a minute. That's the drill. It's harder than it sounds but I'm confident the pass or fail will be me, not the rifle.
I have the patrol version of this same gun that I intend to give the same treatment to. It has a shorter bull barrel. I'll put a more tactical - style scope on that vs. the intermediate distance scope on this one. I'll also do the Timney trigger upgrade.
Ruger did a good job on delivering value in this next generation American line. If the accuracy lives up to Rugers claim, this gun is a winner. And very affordable.
