I read somewhere that various governmental agencies (FBI) had prior warning of the attack but did nothing about it. Like Roosevelt knew they were planning it but secretly wanted a war. The US choked off Japan’s oil and raw material supply, which led to the attack.

It has long been rumored that FDR knew. And who knows, the gov't could have lied about that like a lot of other things, but the official history on the matter is thus...

In Dezember 1941, the US had deciphered the Japanese Diplomatic code, US codename, Purple. The IJN used a different code called JN25. The Japanese diplomats were not made privy to the attack.
The US didn't decipher JN25 until later because the code was new, being implemented in early December 1941 and the crypto analysts didn't have enough traffic to use as a starting point to figure it out. They eventually reverse engineered an encryption machine to decode messages. The Germans had shared their Enigma technology with the Japanese and their machine shared features with Enigma.

Fun Fact:
Purple and the JN25 technology used to break the code, including the machine they made, is still classified. Some lesser facts have been de-classified, but the core methodology is still secret.

We did a LOT of stuff that should not necessarily be secret still, even in my time, but I'd say Purple and JN25 should be.

Some of the stull we did on the carriers did not make it into the Captain's log, but there are posts about them in semi official channels, so I know I was not incorrect.

Also, we were in direct conversations with Japan working diplomatically to prevent war when they attacked.
Like IIRC, December 6th conversations happened in DC, and on the 7th they bombed Pearl.
Kind of like Donald did to Iran.

Why do you say that? I think it should ALL be secret. The public has no need or right to know. Ever. If the public knows, our enemies know. And that's no bueno! My opinion.
