Driverless Semis

Who's liable for anonymous contraband smuggled on a driverless truck - drugs, arms, cash, and humans?
You know it's coming . Particularly with more trucks on the road and employees and contractors servicing them. It's sorta like allowing mail in ballots and ballot harvesting with no means to trace and no humans at the end of the road to document. And add the ballot harvesting to the list of contraband like we saw in 2020 in New York / New Jersey with those semi trailer swaps and driving to another state.

How do State Troopers talk with drivers about problems with these vehicles on the side of the road when pulled over?

How do customs inspectors interrogate drivers on I-10 and elsewhere at checkpoints?
"Sir, where are you going, what is in your truck, do you have any plants?"

Who gets busted for the stash of drugs that are anonymously affixed under a trailer by a third party?
You know - the Mexican cartel guy with the mask and black outfit on that was captured by the truck's camera systems at one of the truck stop fueling stations on I-10 near the border. About 10 bricks of cocaine doesn't take up much space, but is financially rewarding.

How will truck stop hookers make cash? 🤔

So, many questions and unintended consequences.

Imagine UPS / Fedex using driverless delivery trucks "manned" by Optimus robots to drop the packages off at the door. Think about how much money UPS / Fedex would save. Human delivery drivers make serious money and benefits. Plus employer taxes saved. Holy shit.

Well, probably not some poor Truck driver who doesn't have a clue what's being put into his trailer.

It's all electronic. Even now, if I'm pulled over, I push a couple buttons on my phone and email my logs to the trooper, which contains the manifest number, product, origin and destination.

The only thing I've ever been asked at checkpoints on I-10 is, "Are you a US citizen?"
No driver, no citizenship check.

Again, probably not some poor driver who doesn't have a clue.

It's not like the old days, now, you can hardly find a Lot Lizard when you really need one😉

I forgot about the lot lizards, maybe they should learn to write code, or something.

Im more curious about, what do the current truck drivers do? This hopefully will never go mainstream. All I see, is alot of people being out of a job

What if the rig has lights out? How does the trooper pull them over?
I assume that semis will have the same type of sensors that other autonomous vehicles have and detect lights and sirens. Once pulled over, LEOs communicate with a support center.

Not counting Semis, there are already several thousand autonomous vehicles on the road right now.

I don't think anyone driving trucks today has to worry about being out of work.
