I read the first few paragraphs to get a "feel" for the story, knowing that it was coming from Slate.

Quickly determined it was probably going to be a "racist" piece, scrolled down and skimmed to verify (yes), decided it was TLDR, read some of the comments (about 50/50 split pro/con) and came back here to tell others not to waste their time.
My takeaway is that if you need a (may issue) permit to carry, buy or own a gun in your state, some anonymous
bureaucrat may determine either by your race choice ("choose white"

) and/or first and last name ("choose Smith"

) if you are "OK" to have a gun. With the name Aymann Ismail, the author is denied. He writes from a NJ standpoint, and very little applies to Free states that don't give a shit about the color of your skin or how you spell your name.
Like it or not, EVERYONE is innocuously but observationally racist to a certain extent. For example: Tom Jones or Leroy Jones--which man is black?

I've known a few white guys named Leroy and a few black guys named Tom so that is not a good example. Or is it?

I heard a radio story on NPR where they did a "sting" operation with some corporation hiring for an administrative assistant. "Sean Williams" got a call back where "LaShawn Williams" did not. (or something like that)
If you want to see another garbage "gun" story from Slate, this one is clearly anti-MAGA/pro-LGBTQFUCKYOU+. It is also only about a paragraph before it goes behind a paywall.
