Went to see this film yesterday. I thought it was an appropriate way to spend the 4th.

Produced by faith-based Angel Studios, the film does not have that small Indie produced feel to it. If no one told you, and you could believe that one of the big Hollywood studios would make a patriotic theme film, that is the sense you come away with.

Most of the cast are either newcomers or actors you don't recognize. Kelsey Grammar and Ben Kingsley are the two names that will pop out at you. Both have minor roles and are in it I'm sure so that is recognizable names for the marquee and trailer.

I would like to say that the film is historically accurate, and it is overall, depicting the events that you should have learned in school about the French & Indian Wars. The fact is though that the realities of 18th Century life laid bare would turn off a lot of people and the film needs word of mouth recommendations to succeed.
So, things like slavery are very much in the background. The treatment of the colonists by the British Army is like that of a red headed stepchild, tolerated, but sneered at. And I'm sure this too is sugar coated for today's audience.

The producers did hire indigenous actors to play the native Americans in the film. So, the actors looked like Indians instead of a white guy with a spray tan. Also, only the principal Indian spoke English in the film, serving as translator when others spoke. The rest spoke, what I assume was their native dialect or had no speaking part.

Now Rotten Tomatoes and the Hollywood critics are giving it at best, a lukewarm reception lest they have their Lefty membership card revoked. This is your clue that it is worth seeing. It will very much be popular with the red state folks and panned by the blue staters.
If it tells you anything, the audience at the showing I attended broke out in applause at the end of the film. When was the last time you witnessed that?

I went to see it at an advance screening on the 3rd. It is very well made and definitely worth going to see. I hope there is a sequel picking up where this stopped.
