The point when it's no longer THAT the wind is blowing, it becomes WHAT the wind is blowing... 😯

I've seen 6'X6' target frames ripped out of the carrier and sent down range. One year, a carrier that was anchored in concrete was blown over. Granted, these carriers had been in place about 80 years at that point, but still a lot of wind to do that.

Look at the size of that wind flag and guess the wind speed. :unsure:

that's a really weird looking wind flag. I've never seen one that looks like that. It appears to have a rod in the top of it?

It's is the wind blowing lots of just a little bit.
 
Nope, no rod. That image is a screen capture from a video. Here's another when the flag is lowered and limp. This flag has a square tip. The official winds flags are a pennant that has a pointed tip.

The point is that when the wind reaches a certain speed, the flag will stand straight out like it is starched. At that point, it is no longer useful in estimating wind speed. This above 25 mph. The official flags are cotton. (or they were when I was competing) Nylon flags will not give the same reading to compare to your data book wind chart unless the new ones have been calibrated for nylon.

That's when you need a wind meter instead of a flag. 😯
And anchor all your gear down on the line.
If you've never seen it, it's wild to look through a spotting scope and observe how much deflection there is in a full value wind.
 
Finding good spotting scope vids is not easy. Even then they are not the best quality due to mirage etc..

But here's one where you can see the vapor trail pretty good.
Spotter is to the right of shooter. If you get directly behind the shooter, you lose sight of the bullet at the apogee. You also have to pull back the focus on the scope a little and let the target be a little blurry to see the vapor trail.

This is a 6.5 Creedmore. 30 cal. will give you a more visible trace with a more pronounced arch to the trajectory. But you can clearly see how much over the target the bullet is at apogee. Now remember all the deer hunters that have told you they hold 2 inches over the deer for a 600 yd. shot with a 100 yd. zero. :ROFLMAO:
