You don't bring a knife to a gunfight? 🤔

I'm not familiar with Costco policy but I'll assume the worker was a "greeter" and that they have a "no open carry" policy or worse, are a gun-free-zone? :eek:

Right. The report doesn't say if he "drew" the pocketknife. But if he did... then that was REALLY stupid.... AND it might actually support the self-defense claim by the thug.
 
It’s in their membership agreement that nobody reads. I wonder what Sam’s policy is.

That's fine, of course. They can have whatever policy they want. But the "greeter" employee made a HUGE (and fatal) mistake. He tried to stop the thug. Even if it was only verbally, it was a BIG mistake. But if he pulled out his fucking pocketknife, then he was a MORON.

I agree wholeheartedly.
 
Should be plenty of video of the interaction. While the shooter sounds like a typical ghetto POS thug, if the employee approached him with a drawn knife, he was a complete fool. How would the shooter have known about the knife if the employee hadn't displayed it to him? It sounds like there was a whole lot of stupid in the air that day.

Nothing wrong with HAVING it. I carry two knives every day. Neither is for self-defense.

But if the "greeter" used his knife to intimidate the idiot with a drum mag sticking out of his pocket, then he was an even BIGGER idiot. AND the thug will have a LEGITIMATE claim of self-defense.
 
If I'm a Costco greeter, and some thug walks in with a drum mag sticking out of his pocket, I'm not saying SHIT to him. I'm stepping aside and calling 911. Let the pros handle it.

Exactly. This is one of those cases when we might end up having to defend the thug over the "good guy." Plenty of stupid to go around, but if the employee approached with a drawn knife, he got what he asked for.

The "news" article is written in a very slanted fashion to demonize the shooter and defend the "heroic" employee.
  • The shooter "has a criminal record"... Ok, but was he prohibited from owning or carrying a gun? Was he convicted of prior violent crimes? There are a lot of good people out there who technically "have a criminal record."
  • They mention that "Police stated that Corrigan had a pocket knife when the incident occurred." But they fail to mention if that knife was in his pocket or if it had been drawn. How big was the knife? I have some pretty scary looking pocketknives.
  • Ohio is a permitless carry state for both open and concealed carry. So the shooter was perfectly legal to be carrying a (presumed) Glock with a drum mag. It may be stupid to carry it the way he was carrying, but it wasn't illegal as long as he was not a prohibited person.
  • The article mentions the cadence of the shots "Bryant allegedly went on to fire one round and then "after a split-second pause, fired many more, one after another, with no pause," a court document revealed." as if this is somehow damning. If a guy comes at me with a drawn knife and I shoot him one, but he still presses toward me, I'm going to keep shooting until I feel the threat is neutralized.
There's so much more to unpack here. While my knee-jerk reaction is to assume the dreadhead with a drum-fed Glicky sticking out of his pants was the bad guy, the truth may, just MAY, be that he was actually the victim and that Coscto Rambo was completely in the wrong.

The prosecutor detailed the final moments of Randy Corrigan’s life saying, “Mr. Corrigan, who was an employee at Costco, was on a break. He was in his car and noticed this and attempted to stop him as he prior to entering the front door of this busy Costco.”

According to the documents obtained by WJW, Corrigan did approach the armed shooter with a pocketknife prior to being shot. Bryant later allegedly told police that "a man approached me with a knife for no reason” and “I defended myself," per the court documents.

So, given that carrying in your pocket with a drum mag sticking out visibly is stupid...

Bryant is going into Costco when a random guy approaches him from the parking lot with a drawn knife. Not an employee, on the clock, standing at the front door checking ID, but a random man who just jumped out of his car with knife in hand. Did he approach from behind, surprising Bryant? Yell something at him while brandishing a weapon? This would be a completely different situation than if he had been standing at the door, clocked in, and calmly let a customer know that guns aren't allowed in the store.
