I've explained MANY times to civilians who have never served and don't understand that military service is dangerous ALL THE TIME. We lost 4 men on my ship during the two years I was aboard. All of them were during routine peacetime operations. Ironically, we didn't lose anyone in the Persian Gulf.
More recently, when I said my son was deployed, they'd ask, "Middle East?" Nope. "Oh, so he's in a safe area." Ummmm... nope, again. There are hostile areas all over the world that aren't in the Middle East (and aren't covered by the news media). People are so stupid.
Military service members are putting their lives on the line every single day, regardless of where they are or what their particular jobs are.
