I haven't bought any ammo in several months (or longer?). I haven't been to the range lately, either.

But I just went to Target Sports USA, my usual place to buy ammo. I have my "favorites" (many different calibers) list of what I buy. NONE of them are in stock. NONE. So, I went to their 9-mm page. The cheapest 115-gr 9mm ammo is 28 cents / round!

Don’t know if you have an Academy store near you but they have Blazer Brass 9mm 115gr for about $24/100. If you like that kind. I know most folks have their preference.

Guess I don't know why anyone would be panicking but then I have my own bubble.
But I should fire up the reloader and make all my 223 brass full.
Don't know what the hell I will do when my stash of components gets critical.
Folks that are paying $50 a lb for powder, I have several options in my hoard and I didn't pay that kind of money.

Holy Schnike! I just checked my local shop and my pistol powder is 48 bucks a pound and the powder I use for 223/5.56, 308 and 30-06 is 49 bucks a pound.

Glad I have "sufficient" amounts of all.
Plenty of primers too.

Plus, "sufficient" of factory and hand loads of all my main calibers.

Which is of course, well above what it takes to make the papers as having "An Arsenal!!!!!" in any Liberal state/county/city

I have a very basic Lee setup I bought to reload rifle rounds. When I quit benchrest shooting it was mothballed. I have debated getting into reloading many times but lack the motivation. I prefer to clickity click and a package shows up in two days. Three minutes of effort.

My wife like to play slot machines. I get bored after the first 12 seconds. The press reminds me of a one armed bandit.

I was close to getting all new stuff and start reloading about a year ago. Ordered a few dies and a digital scale but got distracted and never got back to it.

Costs me $.17 to load 9mm with 124 gr. FMJs or JHPs. Did a bunch when it was scarce and expensive a while back and still have some.

Being retired, loading is a good way to use time and feel productive. Most of my loading is done in the Winter months so I am ready when things warm up.

Another would require a $1,000,000 liability insurance policy in order to get a state Firearms owner’s ID card. Possessing unserialized ammo will be a misdemeanor. I think there are a couple more. My wife won’t move out of state since our children and grandchildren live here. This state under Pritzker is the worst it has been since I came here out of college in 1970.

This has always puzzled me. What would the insurance company be indemnifying you for? For what kind of liability??? If you commit a CRIME with a gun, no insurance will indemnify that. So, what is the "insurance" for EXACTLY? And what insurance company would take such risks?

I feel for you. I lived there for 43 years of my 55 on this planet. We got out in ‘22. I’ve got 3 teens and wanted to get out before they had kids and got locked in. Learned that after talking with my former neighbors that had grandkids and that’s why they never moved.

My sister lived in IL all her adult life. Baffling. I asked a 1000 times why she didn’t leave. She grew to hate it but wouldn’t move away.

Human nature I guess. I have the nomad gene. I never stay anywhere very long. I don’t even need a reason to pack up and go. I’ve never left a state because of gun laws (never had to) but taxes are a major factor for me. So are politicians and the assholes who vote for far left wackos. The best example is MD and NJ. Taxes, politics, and policy were the reasons I left.

Regarding gun laws…. I would not move to a state with oppressive gun laws. I have been lucky and left liberal states before a lot of those restrictive gun regs became law. I left for other reasons.

I’ve noticed the difference between buying new or reloading isn’t much in terms of cost. It can be slightly cheaper to reload after the cost of the required equipment is recovered. However… you have to factor in your time. To me time is money and mine is expensive!

Those who do it because they enjoy it .. it’s perfectly legit. Financially, the return on investment is pretty thin. Let’s say you save a nickel per round. You need to reload north of 20,000 rounds to break even on the gear. For many gun owners , they don't shoot that many rounds in 5 years. Me… that’s about a year.

But I agree... I've done the math, too. It's definitely not a money saver. Not significant in any case. And during shortages... not at all. Then there's my time. The reality is I'm quite sure I won't "enjoy" reloading at all. I don't see any joy in that AT ALL. Just me, personally. So my time becomes even more valuable. And that definitely makes reloading even more expensive than just buying factory ammo.

My assumption is that liability is liability. You negligently injure someone, the means of injury is non sequitur. Run over them with your car, for example. Or your lawn mower. Point is… you injured them. Now so much the how. More about the what.

I dont think their twisted logic is about self defense. I think it’s about having liability coverage for careless use of the weapon. Like leaving it where your kid gets his hands on it and shoots a friend or someone else. Or perhaps the old fart mistakenly shooting a 12 year old trick or treater because their costume frightened him (this actually happened).

My business is required to carry insurance. And it ain't cheap. That’s not to protect the company. We have very few tangible assets. It’s a requirement in most states that armed security and private investigators be licensed, bonded and insured.

Personally, I have an umbrella policy for the usual liabilities vs. one for the home, cars, etc. I think this is something like what the Illinois gun haters are advocating for. In short… own a gun, you need liability insurance in case you fuck up.

Again, I dont agree with this policy. But I think that’s the spirit of it all. Also to keep Bubba from being able to afford owning a firearm. Legally, anyway. Here’s another nugget : Insurance is regulated at the state level. If they mandate insurance, it cannot fly if no insurance is available. They might force insurance companies to provide liability for gun owners - or risk losing there ability to operate in that state. Gun haters arent all stupid. They have this figured out.

I have found high quality match grade ammo today is just as good as hand loads. Black Hills and Nosler for example.

I admit to being cynical about old school bench rest shooters. They love their traditions and will never be convinced my factory rifle and match grade ammo is just as accurate as their $20,000 custom rifle with the cryogenically treated barrel made from an exotic metal that came from a meteor and is lubricated with rhinoceros semen.

Some of these guys go home after the match and hand load with one hand, jerking off with the other.

Mean spirited? I only say this because I found them very cliquish and unwelcoming to newcomers. I placed in a match and they purposely did not call out my name and hand me the little plaque because I was not one of their crew. I was shooting a factory rifle, decent but not over the top scope, and factory ammo. Blasphemy. A “He’s not one of us” thing. Assholes.
