I was tasked with creating a scenario-based discussion to see which guns (plural) you would want as your LAST guns since I thought ONE was just not enough... :D (LINK to previous discussion...)

Here is the scenario:
Power has been out for three days due to an EMP taking out the grid. The natives are restless and hungry, starting to loot and pillage and they're heading your way. You are helping your buddy secure and booby-trap his gun store so it turns into an inferno if breached. You both will leave out the back into an awaiting up-armored M939 6x6 and escape into the woods. You've filled the truck with all the prepper food and supplies and there isn't much room left. You both are fully armored and equipped with first aid packs and night vision.

RULES:
  • You get one shotgun with an extra barrel and three loading devices/attachments (if desired).
  • You get one handgun with an extra slide/barrel/cylinder to change caliber (if desired) and three mags/speedloaders.
  • You get one rifle with an extra upper/barrel to change caliber (if desired) and three mags.
  • You get ONE sighting device per firearm either irons, scope, red-dot or holo.
  • You get to add any other accessories such as holsters, slings, etc.
  • Here is the kicker, you only get $1000 worth of ammo at today's prices so spend wisely to make the most out of the firearms you choose.
Stay safe out there! ;)

Shotgun - 20ga Browning Superposed or Citori in the usual field stock. Regular beads on the rib.

Rifle - 9mm AR with a 1-6 scope. Alternative barrelled upper in 300 Blackout. Backup iron sights and a sling.

Pistol - Glock 26 or 19 with a RMR. Thumb break belt holster, in leather. Doesn't have to be fast, it just has to retain the firearm on me in a rough and tumble new world.

Rational... the over/under shotgun is dirt simple and winged game is plentiful. Turkeys, crows, pidgeons, etc. You take what you can get, including rabbits and ground hogs. The rifle can do small game and predators as a 9mm while sharing magazines and ammunition with the pistol. The larger 300 Blackout cartridge works for larger creatures... deer, etc. I'm not going bear or elk hunting and I don't need range beyond 200 yards. Pistol... well, it is the means of self defense of last resort against the 2 legged creatures.

The ammunition supply... 20ga #8 shot. 9mm ball ammunition. 168gr 300 Blackout. My $1000 budget provides for a lot of ammunition, since I will make it myself. Two types of propellants: H110 and Unique. Two types of primers (Small Rifle and 209 shotshell), and enough lead to make shot and cast bullets. Or, if I have to buy the ammunition.... a couple of boxes of Hornady 300 Blackout super-sonic. The rest equally split between 9mm ball and 20ga shot-shells.

That should keep me in food long enough to make snares, traps, and a bow and arrows or spear. (Hmm... can I find enough flint to knap arrow heads and spear points. )

How much fuel does this awaiting up-armored M939 6x6 and escape into the woods hold?

If your buddy owns the gun store, why would your ammo supply be financially limited??

But if we're going to limit it to $1000 of ammo....

I'd dump all the extra barrels for different calibers. That seems pointless. I don't need "variety" of calibers / gauges in that scenario. Better to consolidate the caliber choice and maximize the number of rounds.

Because of the $1000 limit, I'd also consider pruning the guns down to two instead of three. I'd get rid of the shotgun, keeping a rifle and a pistol. Rifle to fend off bogies at a distance. Pistol for close quarters, if we failed to keep them away with the rifle.

So... Glock 19 and my SCAR-16S. Two cases of 5.56 and one case of 9mm.

Shotgun: Mossberg 590A1 with ghost ring sights

Pistol: Glock 19 with Warren Tactical night sights

Rifle: Mk12 Mod 0 with suppressor and scope

I have just one question- who gets/has $1,000 worth of ammo and only six magazines???

I'm with Racer here, 5.56 on the rifle (standard carry handle M4A1 setup) cause I can pick up mags and more ammo off dead bodies when ammo on hand runs out, and for pistol, I'm more comfortable with 10mm.... Albeit a little more expensive, but it can balance out by not needing to carry so much extra 5.56

I could get on board with this approach though I think I'd still grab a shotgun with some shells as it could prove useful in some close quarter situations as well as game hunting.

Given the AR15, I may even consider having my Taurus Judge with some .410 shot and 45 Long Colt. The bulk of the $ being thrown on .223 but the 45 Long Colt could be a good close range man/beast stopper and the .410 offer some good game options as I could grab a long .410 shotgun with it for some versatility.

Yeah... I didn't consider the hunting for game / food part. I was just thinking about zombies.
